broken cymbidium spike

Question
One of my cymbidium spikes is almost broken off, but it is not very near blooming.  Could I put it in a vase of water and hope for it to bloom or try to leave it hanging from the branch or try to wrap some tape around it?

Answer
Hello Margaret,

OUCH!!!  A broken spike!

If it is not broken cleanly but only bent over slightly, it may continue to grow and the flowers open.  But, if it is broken open, it might be better to go ahead and cut it off and place it in a vase with water.  Before putting it in the vase, cut about a half inch off the bottom to expose fresh tissue so it will continue to take up water.  Also, put a little sugar or 7-up soda in the water to give it a little boost.  Replace the water at least once a week, twice a week is better.

Keep in mind that a growing spike can be somewhat brittle, especially when temperatures are below 60F.

Hope this helps it to bloom for you.
