Miniature orchid

Question
My friend had a teen-tiny orchid plant that grew on a stick about the size of a tongue depressor. The orchids were about the size of a fat mosquito. I'd love to have one of these babies but don't know what they are called. Please respond as I'd love to purchase them.

Answer
These are called twig epiphytes or equitant oncidiums or tolumnias.  The are difficult to grow for the most part because they come from the carribean basin where they have good humidity, air movement and nightly mists and grow in the full sun-- conditions hard to replicate in the home. You can google one of these terms to learn more.  They were once available at K-mart stores in the south of Florida but no more.  I suspect most people lost the plants and their enthusiasm.  People who have had the most success with them, grow them in commercially available Orchidariums where they can control temperature, air movement and humidity.
