QuestionI have a beautiful orchid that appears healthy (it's growing, good color, etc.) except that the new leaves are coming out all crimped. Could this be a virus?
Thanks
AnswerThe orchid you have is undoubtedly Brassia Rex and is a thin leaved orchid. The crimping is not due to a virus but likely reflects your growing conditions. It may be due to keeping the growing mix too dry or your growing mix has deteriorated causing the loss of some growing roots. Either condition deprives the new leaves of nutrients and the flow of plant sap to the new growth. This is a fairy common problem with thin leaved orchids.
It is unlikely that the crimped leaves will "uncrimp", but, once the condition is corrected, new leaves should be fine. If the plant has not been repotted for a year or more, you may want to obtain some fresh orchid potting mix and repot your plant. It is important that it is Orchid Potting mix. Then, put the plant on a regular watering schedue such as once per week. Soak it thoroughly when you water and then set it aside. Do not let the pot sit in water. Do not use water from a water softner. Let the water that you use stand until it is near room temperature before using it.
