Almost dead vanda... help

Question
Hello Jim,
I just recieved my first vanda, in the mail... it seems to be in horrible condition but since this is the first time I've ever bought this type of orchid (im still confused). The roots many of them are brown/dry/crunchy, some are green/white, the leaves some of the ends are black and there is a yellow like one-inch spotting on some of the leaves, this to me seems like a very unhealthy plant, I just wanted a take from someone with orchid experience so I can call in and have the proper information to demand a refund/return--- might I mention, the spike that came with it is dead....
let me know as Im somewhat aggitated and concerned.

Answer
Hello Suzie,

From your description on the condition of the vanda orchid you just received, it definitely does not appear to be in very good condition.  When you ordered it, did the vendor state that it was in bloom?  If they did, then you definitely should call them and tell them about what condition it arrived.  Any reputable vendor will offer to send you another orchid plant as a replacement but if this one doesn't offer a replacement or refund, then I'd avoid doing business with them.  Most vendors do not want plants sent back to them, especially those that have arrived in such bad condition because it is not worth their time and effort to revive it or the cost of return postage.

Regardless of the outcome, you can try seeing if you can revive it.  Since you said there are a few green/white roots on it, there is still some hope for it.  Soak the roots in a bucket of lukewarm water for about an hour, they should plump up a bit.  While most vandas grow best with their roots totally exposed, you can try putting it in a pot with large grade orchid bark and keep it evenly moist but not constantly wet.  To do this, wait until the bark begins to dry before watering again.  Vandas also are heavy feeders and it would be a good idea to mix a little balance type orchid fertilizer in the water you use to water it with.

Good luck with the vendor!
