The key to watering is to have fresh orchid potting mix.  With a fresh orchid poting mix you can water once or  twice per week without any problem.  If the plant has not been repotted in the past year, you need to be very careful on the watering as the old potting mix breaks down and retains more water and less air leading to root rot and decline of the plant.  If the orchid potting mix is not fresh, you should test the potting mix before watering.  An old potting mix may feel dry on the surface but retain a lot of moisture in the lower half of the pot.  You may feed the plant with every watering if you use i/4 tsp per gallon of water.
