QuestionThere are small white bugs in my orchid pot and I can't seem to find any information on what kind of bugs they are. I have repotted twice, with different bags of orchid bark (thought maybe the bark was infested). The bugs seem to disappear after the repotting, but then return a couple of months later. They don't seem to be affecting the orchids - the plants are healthy and blooming. Do you know what the bugs might be and do you have any suggestions on eliminating the bugs...or should I just keep repotting to control?
AnswerWithout a description I would be taking a shot in the dark, but here goes. Assuming it is not a mealy bug which usually is sucking on the plant, I assume they are fungus gnats which are, as you suggested, harmless to the plant and lay their eggs and carry out most of their life cycle in the potting mix. Two things would help. See if you can find sticky paper at a garden center. This should attract and trap the flying stage. To attack the egg and larval stage, use a powdered or granular insecticide which will work its way into the potting mix when sprinkled on the surface. It will take a couple of weeks before you notice any diminution in the insects.
