Strange nodes and slimy film on orchid leaves no blooms for 8 mnths.

Question
Wayne,

Our orchid hasn't rebloomed in 8 months. The underside of the leaves has these small bumps which might be lavi of some sort and the leaves get a slimy fil on them . What is happening?   Jim

Answer
From your description, the slimy film is likely from a snail or slug.  The bumps may be a scale insect.  Using a Q-tip and some rubbing alcohol, see if you can remove one or more.  If they come off, that confirms the presence of this insect.  If scale, you will need to remove as many as you can find using the alcohol and q-tip.  Then you will need to get an insecticidal spray and use it to kill the insects you haven't removed with the alcohol.  There may still be eggs so you will need to be vigilant about the reoccurrence.  If scale, this could have weakened your plant-- if the infestation is heavy.  Scale are sucking insects so they can deprive your plant of much energy.  It sounds as if your plant could use a repotting as you may have snails or slugs in your potting mix.  Clean your roots thoroughly of any old potting mix and repot in a clean pot with fresh orchid potting mix.

I'm asuming that you have a phalaenopsis orchid.  If so, the repotting could still permit new bloom spikes this spring as this is the time of year for blooming.

Please bear in mind that these are my best educated guesses based upon the limited information you provided.
