Question
hello, my boyfriend recently bought me a gorgeous orchid plant. i know that they can be kinda tricky to take care of so i just want to make sure that i am doing it right. i keep in inside in a room that gets moderate sunlight. it has to stems of flowers. one bloomed before the other, but the one that bloomed first is starting to turn brown and wilt. i just want to make sure that this is normal and that i didnt do something to kill this beautiful plant. i water it maybe once a week. i look forward to hearing from you soon : )

Answer
I assume that your orchid plant is a phalaenopsis orchid.  Yes, it is normal for the old flower spikes to die back.  You may cut them off when blooming has ceased.

Most of these plants are lost due to failure to do annual repotting.  The old potting mix deteriorates and gets waterlogged leading to root rot.  If your plant hasn't been recently repotted, when it is done flowering, buy a small bag of orchid potting mix and unpot your plant.  Remove all of the old mix from the roots and cut off any "mushy" roots which are actually dead.  Healthy orchid roots are firm and turn green when wet.  Choose a plastic pot to repot the plant and a size that will easily accommodate the root mass.
Set the plant in the pot and fill in with the new orchid potting mix to the base of the plant.  By so repotting annually after flowering, you will ensure a healthy plant with many years of reblooming.
