Questionhello, i dont know much about orchids, but last year i was given a beautiful phalaenopis orchid plant. the funny thing is, that from the stem where the flowers were, an whole new plant is growing, with leaves and roots. i dont know what to do about this, or how to replant it, what should i do?
AnswerThe growth of a new plant at a node on the old flower spike is not unusual in phalaenopsis. Yours has already developed roots and can be potted up in a separate plastic pot appropriate to accommodate the roots that are developing. You can separate this new plant from the old flower spike by cutting it from the old spike at the point where it attaches. These new plants, called keikis, can not only develop roots on the old flower spike but can develop into a mature plant that can flower when old enough while still attached to the old flower spike. I recommend separating it, however, and growing it in a separate pot. Use an orchid potting mix and keep it moist following initial potting.
