humidity

Question
Hello, since the weather has been so cold here and my orchids now reside inside one of the bedrooms, is there some way to increase the humidity inside the room (it is the coolest room in the house). The force air heating is drying out everything. This rooms temp. is approx. 68-70 degrees

Answer
You can use a humidity tray.  There are commercially made trays that have a grid over a flat tray.  Water is kept in the tray and the plants are placed on the grid above the water.  You could, however, be creative and make your own tray called a pebble tray.  In the pebble tray, you fill the tray half full of small pebbles, aquarium gravel, etc and place the plants on top of the gravel.  Water level should be kept below the top of the gravel. This increases the local humidity just around the plants.  Another effective means is to buy a small humidifier with a humidistat control so it turns on only when the humidity drops below a preset level.  Electronic humidty meters are also available in most hardware sections of Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, etc.  That will give you a reading of the humidity level in the vicinity of your plants. You could go with any or all of these ways to increase humidity.  If you just opt for the humidity tray, I recommend a small fan to help circulate the humidity generated.
