white mold in cymbidium mediumo

Question
I noticed that upon inspection of a few poor growing plants found the medium has white mold. the plants did not have any new roots even after a year. what can I do.

Answer
Hello Kathy,

Are you sure it is a white mold?  There is a fungus, the name escapes me, that can grow in the potting medium and cause a slow death.  This fungus looks sort of spidery and as it grows will intertwine around the roots, eventually taking over the entire pot.

The only solution I know is to repot using fresh clean potting medium, remove all of the roots then repot it.  Repotting is best done in late winter or early spring when new root activity begings but you can do it now as long as you are able to keep the repotted cym in a warm place above 50 F through winter.  If you do decide to repot, try to bury the bottom half of the pseudobulbs into the medium.

Hope this helps.  Good luck.
