Orchid might be dying

Question
I recieved an orchid about 2 months ago. I keep it in my office on my desk. It was blooming when I got it, but the blooms began to wilt, and the roots were growing out of the original pot, so I replanted it in a bigger pot with Miracle Grow soil.

After I did this, the other stem (whcih had no blooms on it when I got it) began to grow buds, while the other stem's tip began to turn a yellow-ish red and dried out.

Not too long after that, the buds that were beginning to form on the other stem dried out as well.

Is there anything I can do to save my orchid?

Answer
Hello Amy,

From your description of what happened and what you did in trying to save it may have been the wrong thing to do at the time.  Here is why.

You repotted it into a larger pot because the roots were growing outside of the original pot.  What you should have done was wait until the new blooms had wilted also.  Also, phalaenopsis orchids prefer having their roots slightly crowded within the pot so only go to a larger pot only if the roots will not fit into the old pot.

Phalaenopsis flowers can last for several months, if they were already open when you received it, it just may have been time for them to die.  One thing to be watchful of is whether there may be some fruits nearby.  Ripening fruits emit ethylene gas which can be fatal to the flowers.

With all that said, if the phalaenopsis plant still looks okay, you may want to consider repotting it back into the old pot.  Also, an office environment is not the best place to grow orchids.  If you can take it home and place it where it will receive bright indirect sunlight, temperatures between 60 to 85 F, humidity above 50% with a little air movement around it, it may produce a new stem next year and you can take it back to the office for every one to admire.

Hope this has helped.  Good luck and good growing.
