How to get an orchid to flower?

Question
Often do orchids set on blooms?  And is there any thing in particular that I need to do to ensure that the plants will?

Answer
Most orchids bloom once per year.  Most also tend to bloom in the spring, but there are many exceptions depending upon the type of orchid.  Use of a bloom booster fertilizer can help with flowering (use a fertilizer with a high middle number such as 10/30/10).  Use a low concentration (eg 1/4 teaspoon per gallon of water).  For best flowering, your plant needs to have healthy roots so yearly repotting is a good idea.  Use only orchid potting mix and remove any "mushy" roots from your plant during repotting. Good light will also help with growth and blooming.  Phalaenopsis like an east window while other types like higher light levels.  Cymbidium orchids need a cool fall outside (40-45 degrees) to set their flowers for the following spring.  So, a lot depends upon the type of orchid you have.
