QuestionHello, I have 2 very large Colorado spruces that I keep about 2 and half feet trimmed from ground. I was wondering if I could grow rhubarb or any other perennial under the trees, since the ground is covered with weeds? It would be so much nicer to having something more appealing than the weeds. The reason I was thinking of rhubarb is because I went on a walk in a dense forest and seen rhubarb growing, and hoping this is something that I could plant there.
Thank you,
Dawn
AnswerHi Dawn,
Thanx for your question. Chances are, there is too much shade to successfully grow rhubarb underneath these trees. Rhubarb requires at least 6-8 hours of sunlight a day and I think thee would be too much shade. I think the plant will grow but the quality of it, will not be the best. It will tend to be lanky and soft and messy. Of course, there is no harm in trying and you can judge the results for youself. Rhubarb often does well next to a treeline where it is able to get sufficient sunlight before the trees start shading the plant. I hope this helps.
