Iriash Moss

Question
Hi,

I have a question around growing Irish Moss from seed.   If I was to grow them in pod, how many seeds do I need per 2x2 inch pod?

My wife got me a packet with 1000 seeds.  And 1000 seeds seems to take up less space than a few grains of sugar.   I've read sites that say to do 20 seeds per pod some say 3 to 4.  I don't know how I would realistically count them to that detail.

I'm estimating 1 packet will be good for 2 to 5 pods.

What are your thoughts?

Answer
Hi Dom,
Thanx for your question.  I know the seeds are like dust, so, I would try to handle them with maybe some tweezers and just try to separate the seeds as best you can.  You may have to plant a "pinch" of seeds and then separate the seedlings when they are large enough to handle.  I know I have started tiny seeds like that and over the years have learned to adjust the "pinch" so that the seedlings aren't difficult to handle.  An example is basil.  Basil seeds are tiny black dots so I just take a pinch of them which turns out to be anywhere from 30-100 seedlings.  If I let them grow long enough, they eventually become fairly easy to handle.  That's what I would suggest.  I don't know how much that helps you as I've never tried to grow Irish moss before from seeds.  Let me know how it turns out.
thx,
Tom
