QuestionI was told that this type of lily is supposed to be deer resistant. I came out this morning to find that every single bud on my huge lily was gone. Would this have been caused by a deer? There is no other possible explanation.
AnswerHi Lorrie,
Thanx for your question. There is a huge difference between deer resistant and deer proof. Just like water resistant watches and waterproof watches. A waterproof watch is made never to be adversely affected by water while a water resistant watch may succumb to water damage if subjected to water enough times. Deer resistant just means the plant is not a favorite food of deer. At some point though, deer will eat just about anything. Lily buds are especially tasty to a deer. In my experience, just about everything called deer-resistant, eventually gets some chomps, bites made out of it or even made as a whole meal if the deer are hungry enough. I'm sorry about your lily. There are some applications you can buy at the nursery or garden center that further repel deer. Liquid Fence has worked for me but for every recommendation I give you, someone will come behind me and say it didn't work for them. You will have to go down to the nursery or garden center and start experimenting with different items. I hope this helps.
