Bleeding Heart

Question
We recently planted Bleeding Heart roots and have been waiting for them to sprout. We are not sure how long this will take and what they will look like. How often should we be watering them and what temp. should they be at. We live in Southern Wisconsin but it has been in the 90's the past few weeks. any help that you could give these new home owners and inexperienced gardeners would bee helpful. Thank You.

Answer
Hi Janice,
Thanx for your question.  In the heat of summer, bleeding heart will turn yellow and wither away as it slips into dormancy for the rest of the season.  This is a spring-blooming plant and is usually done by mid summer especially here in the lower Midwest.  In the upper-Midwest, with temps of 90s, yours would have been going into dormancy.  Because you bought bare roots, the plant will probably not emerge this year but will do so next spring.  No need to do anything.  Just give it an initial watering and if you experience drought, water once a week with a good soaking.  I hope this helps.
Tom
