AnswerHi Joan,
Thanx for your question. I would just buy some standard potting soil. Use a 12-12-12 balanced fertilizer following the instructions for application on the box. In the spring I would make a small application of bone meal for rhizome growth per instructions on the package. I don't know that I would go to the trouble of spraying with diluted fertilizer. Not sure there is any value added point to that unless you have the time to do that. Just use half strength 12-12-12 and spray every 10-14 days. These plants benefit from direct sun and should be watered on a weekly basis. Once summer comes, water only when the soil dries out on the top. They are best put outdoors during the summer. If you can put them out on a patio or back porch during the summer, that can be very helpful. If it starts getting hot above 80篎 the plant will need to be protected from hot sun. This plant is a native of the lower Andes slopes and benefits from a cool but not freezing atmosphere that is semi-dry and direct sun. I hope this helps.
