QuestionI live in Lancaster PA. and i will like to know if i plant rose of sharon seeds in fall can them survive the winter? Thank you
AnswerHi Jose,
Thanx for your question. I do not recommend planting Rose-of-Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) now. I would hold the seeds over until about 8 weeks before the last frost and then plant them indoors in separate pots. They will germinate in a warm environment in 10-20 days and be ready to go out in full sun after the last frost. Be sure to place the plants in the shade for 10 days first to get them acclimated to the outdoors.
I know that rose-of-Sharon come up on there own in the spring from seeds that have been dispersed in the fall. You may go ahead and try that by planting the seeds in the desired location and allowing Nature to take its course. Germiantion will not occur until the soil is sufficiently heated to about 70F which may be late May or early June for you. I hope this helps.
