QuestionI live in No. Calif and have Astilbes planted all around my bird bath. They have always preformed as they should but already this year they are turning brow. Isn't this too early? Do you think they are dying or just dying off for the season? Should I cut them back now?
Thanks
AnswerHi Joan,
Thanx for your question. This time of year it is natural for astilbes to start going dormant. They will be back next spring after the last frost. The only thing I would caution about astilbes is that they tend to die off if the ground becomes consistently dry. They like their surroundings to be a bit on the moist side. You may cut them to the ground and this will help maintain sanitation in your garden and prevent the spread of disease. I hope this helps.
