QuestionI am trying to grow Shasta daisies in southwest Florida (Cape Coral, FL).
They seed quickly and, of course, grow quickly but they grow very tall and put out very small blooms. I've tried pinching them back over and over and still don't get large blooms. They get lots of sun. One set gets watered daily and another just benefits from the rains we get. Neither produce large blooms.
Can Shasta daisies be grown satisfactorily in southwest FL? If so, what should I be doing differently?
AnswerHi Rita,
Thanx for your question. Shasta Daisies (Leucanthemum superba) is hardy from zones 3-9, so you are on the edge. The plants may not be getting enough dormant time. But, I'm wondering if you're not subjecting them to too much nitrogen by some chance. Because, it sounds like they are rapidly growing out and not blooming much. That signals too much nitrogen to me. Are the plants close to a lawn that is periodically treated with lawn chemicals or have you been putting something on them? The sun if fine. Watering daily is unnecessary and could be causing the problem too. Generally, down where you are, the soils are pretty sandy and free draining. But, I wouldn't water every day either. Sounds like nitrogen issue to me. If you are feeding them, I would stop. These plants are effortless to grow. I hope this helps.
