QuestionQUESTION: Hi,
I planted a hydrangea plant 2-3 years ago and it hasn't bloomed or grown very much. It is planted in a part shady and part sunny area. I was hoping for any information about this.
Thanks,
Roberta

AnswerHI Roberta,
Ok, let's see here. If you are pruning the plant I would stop. Some hydrangeas will not bloom if you keep chopping off the growing tips. You can prune if you must right after the plant blooms but prune sparingly. Hydrangea rarely needs much pruning. If you live in an area of hot summers, the plant benefits from afternoon shade. If you are in a cooler climate, full sun all day long is good. In some colder climates, the blooming buds often fall victim to late freezes and while the plant doesn't look harmed the blooming buds have been destroyed. There are several hydrangeas that grow well in the north but seldom bloom because of late frost. Use an acidic amendment like Miracid? to amend alkaline soil and improve blooming. Lastly, if you are in a dry area, make sure the plant is watered at least once a week. I hope this helps.
