flowers changing color

Question
My columbine came up almost white--originals last year were blue/purple.
If I plant new blue/purple ones next to them will the same thing happen?

Also, I planted a peach-colored Asiatic lily in the same garden and a week later it is almost cream colored. It's been very hot and sunny, does that explain it?
Thirdly, a candy stripe rose bloomed plain old pink this year. Anything I can do about that? thanks

Answer
Hi Gail,
Thanx for your question.  There are several possibilities as to why your plants are changing color.  In the case of the columbines, they can be short-lived perennials that readily reseed.  If you had a hybrid, the parent plant may have died and a seedling has popped up which shows some of the previous traits that the prior generations may have had.  Or, strong sunlight and very warm temperatures can also bleach flowers out.

For the lily, I would think it's probably the weather that is influencing the color.

I can't tell you why the candy stripe rose is blooming plain old pink unles you have growth from below the graft and the rootstock is blooming.  The blooms from a rootstock will generally be very plain and unimpressive.  Make sure there are no sprouts coming out from below the graft.  Cut them off.  Hopefully, the graft is still alive and it will sprout out and or bloom soon.  I hope this helps.
Tom
