QuestionI saw tulips on sale and wanted to know if i can plant them now as they are flowering, and if there are any special instructions as most people tell me that the season to plant them is the fall.
AnswerHi Yehuda,
Thanx for your question. Generally, tulips should be planted in the fall. They need a cold period in order to bloom and grow the next season. If you are looking at tulips that have been potted and forced to bloom, those will most likely not survive to come back. Generally, the florist industry will force various spring bulbs to bloom early to be used as gifts in the spring time and on Mother's Day. When bulbs are forced to bloom, this causes and incredible expenditure of energy which usually results in the death of the bulb because it has nothing left on which to live because all of the stored starches and sugars have been expended to force the bulb to bloom early. Sometimes, some bulbs will survive and come back but most do not. If you live in a northerly climate and your ground is not frozen, you can plant the bulbs and they may bloom but it's kind of late in the season. I hope this helps.
