QuestionI saw your answer about the frozen gardenia. My question is slightly different. We had an exceptionally cold winter here in central Oklahoma this year, and my 3 year old gardenia bush looks like it has frostbite. (It is about 3 feet tall, and I have never pruned it.) I can still see some green way at the bottom but only a little. Should I prune back the frostbitten part or wait and see if it will put out new leaves on the old wood? Should I prune it at all this year? Thanks for your advice. I have been unable to find anything about this on the web so far.
AnswerHi Sue,
Thanx for your question. Let's wait and see how much of the shrub was actually adversely affected by the frost bite before we do any pruning. After the shrub start recovering and filling out, you can start spot pruning any branches that fail to recover. I hope this helps.
