Perennial Grass

Question
I live in South Western Ontario and want to know if i can cut down my perennial grass this time of year(last week of February).  They are hardy and have huge root balls.  They have been growing for over 5 or 6 years.  I'm pretty sure that i can but would like your opinion. Most of the snow has melted around them.

Answer
Hi Ryan,
Thanx for your question.  I would really wait until mid to late March just to be on the safe side.  The roots are still going to be susceptible to freezing.  I suppose if you could dig a nice deep whole to accommodate the whole rootball comforatably and then mulch it heavily, this might do and because you get a lot of snow up there, snow is a good insulator.  Still, I think I would wait until mid to late March.  I hope this helps.
Tom
