QuestionHello. I live in Zone 6, most things grow well if the deer don't eat them. (And deer-proof plants? No such thing--well, except maybe chrysanthemums.) Anyway, should I fertilize my clematis? I have several types, so does it matter when I fertilize? My double white "Duchess of Edinbrough" blooms early spring, then after pruning has light bloom in fall. Others are summer bloomers, including the pink, bell-shaped Japanese clematis (which I like very much for vigorous bloom and beautiful color, but don't remember the name.) Thanks for any help.
AnswerHi Janet,
Thanx for your question. Any rose or tomato food will work nicely for your clematis. You want a fertilizer that is low in nitrogen (otherwise all you will get is green growth) and higher on phosphorus. Fertilize in the spring after the last frost and then about mid June. I hope this helps.
