Daylillies

Question
I have a  daylily bed that each year gets great greenery but NO blooms . Its in well drained soil, not crowed, and gets full sun at least 8 hrs a day or more. I'm in Central Florida. Our winters have gotten colder the last couple years and we even have been getting a hard freeze a few times during the winter. leaves die back and now leaves are coming back. I only fertilize a little as I was told it would promote leaves not flowers. I'm totally stumped!!  Please help me figure out  whats up with these lilies! I was given these bulbs many years ago and they never have bloomed! could they be too old? They seem so healthy ( robust greenery)

Answer
Hi Lyn,
Thanx for your question.  Every three years, you must thin out your daylilies.  Even though they may not appear crowded, they do crowd quickly and the more of them there are the less blooms.  I would not feed at all.  I used to live in NW Florida and while the soil was sandy, I had not trouble growing nice plants with just a side-dressing of well composted manure.  I think you just need to thin your bed out.  Sounds like you're doing everything else right.  As for feeding, make sure the fertilizer is not high in nitrogen.  A good iris or daylily food will suffice if you feel you must feed.  I hope this helps.
Tom
