QUESTION: Would you be able to give me an opinion of a company called Direct Gardening?  They boast low prices on perennials and bare root tree saplings.  They are an online and mail order company.  I read some reviews online.  Some people said to avoid them while others gave very positive reviews.  Do you know anything about this company, and would you recommend them or not?

ANSWER: Hi Tim,
Thanx for your question.  I'm kind of leary about making recommendations or putting the kabosh on certain companies on line.  The reason is that opinions can be so diverse.  I do a lot of on-line buying and Direct Gardening is one company I have not dealt with.  I have read a lot of negative reviews on the company but, I have no real experience with them.  Every company from whom I buy has had some kind of negative review of some sort.  A guideline to follow is, if there are lots of reviews on the negative side, I'd make a small purchase and see how that goes or, find an alternative with better reviews.  There are a lot of companies out there that don't care about the quality of their products because they deal in such high volumes.  I know my answer is vague but in this case, I can't make a recommendation for or against because I have not dealt with them directly.

Hi Tim,
Thanx for your question.  I haven't purchased any trees except fruit trees from mail order companies.  I have dealt successfully with Stark Brothers, Gurney and Henry Fields.  The Wichita area should have a nice selection of nurseries to choose from too.  I hope this helps.
