QuestionI have read the previous Q&A on "How to split up or thin out Black-eyed Susans." You had said they can be split every 3 years. My question is:My Black-eyed Susans are 1st year, but are so big, they are taking over my shrubs. Can I safely split them or will I kill them?
AnswerHi Sue,
Thanx for your question. My advice about splitting perennials is very general. As long as there is a large enough rootball, you can divide your plants. You only need to make sure there is enough root to go with the new plants. If you have a huge plant now, by all means, go ahead and split it up if you would like to make new plants or the area the plant is in currently is becoming too small. I hope this helps.
