PG Hydrangea pruning

Question
I have PG Hydrangea bushes outside our front door at our new house.  I didn't know that's what they were when we moved in in the early spring so I didn't prune them.  They're now completely wild and taking over the whole garden and I would love to prune them this fall to keep them from being harmed by snow accumulation over the winter.  Will it hurt to prune them now?  Most of the advice I've seen says to prune them in the late winter/early spring.  Also, how vigorously can I prune?  Should I be looking to make cuts at particular parts of the branch?  I know I need to cut out the twiggy bits, but may I really "have at" the thicker branches?

Answer
Hi Elisabeth,
Thanx for your question.  Below is a link to a website I like that will tell you a lot of good things about your PG Hydrangea including good pruning instructions.

I hope this helps.
