QuestionI have a bauginvillea in a pot that is in a lot of sun but it just gets taller and taller without much blooming it is on a drip system live in Fr Worth.
AnswerHi Pat,
Thanx for your question. Make sure you are not providing too much nitrogen to the plant. Too much nitrogen causes all green growth at the expense of blooming. The full sun is good. Also, don't water the bougainvillea too much. Once a week should be enough. They like to get a little dry every now and then. Constant watering is not recommended. They bloom best when the daylight hours are even with the night time hours because this is a tropical plant. It needs frost protection in Zone 8 or brought indoors. Use a 6-8-10 fertilizer such as Bougain?which also contains 5% iron and is good for blooming. This is just an example of available nutrient formulae and not an endorsement on my part. The best time for blooming in the South is in the winter but Bougainvillea don't bloom well as an indoor plant. Here is a link to the Bougainvillea Growers Inc. that I think you may find useful. I hope this helps.
