QuestionI live in northern Illinois and have three rhododendron next to some annual begonias this year. Is it possible that the rhodies are getting too much water as I water the begonias every day? The leaves are turning brown. Haven't fallen yet, but I'm starting to think the bushes are getting too much water. Thanks. Gary
AnswerHi Gary,
Thanx for your question. Did you check the soil? If the soil is muddy and does not appear to be draining well, yes, there is too much water. Rhododendrons require a good amount of water but you live north enough that you don't have to apply copious amounts of water to counteract hot summer sun. The annual begonias don't have a high requirement for water either. The general rule is to give the plants a good soaking once a week if there is no regualr rain. I hope this helps.
