QuestionI live in the heart of tx, last yr was my first yr to put yellow bells in the ground. I cut them back in the winter and they came back fine, some of them 7ft, but very few and some, no flowers. 6- 7 hrs sun. help!
AnswerHi Gail,
Thanx for your question. If you're talking about Tecoma stans (yellow bells) common in the Southern portion of the U.S., these are pretty carefree plants. They even do well in hot, dry conditions like in and around the Phoenix and Tucson areas of the Desert Southwest. You can give them a good soaking once a week, but, they'll do fine without it. If you're feeding them, I would stop. Too much nitrogen can cause them to grow lots of green growth with little or no blooming. It sounds like they're getting plenty of sun. Lawn fertilizers can leach into the garden and cause all green growth. I imagine too that this being the second year of the plant, pruning it back to the ground in the winter although harmless has caused the plant to take a long time regrowing and it will reward you with lots more blooms in a few weeks. I hope this helps.
