Question
Mysterious Moonflower
I was given 2 of these plants and was told it was a moonflower. the one bloomed and we missed it. Tonight at 9:17 the second one bloomed in front of me while I was doing the dishes. took about 6 seconds to open to a beautiful lemon yellow flower. The leaves look like a dandelion sort of, flatish. Is this a true mysterious moonflower because everything I read about it says they are white or sometimes pinkish.......this one is bright yellow and so was the other one. Do they seed themselves? Do I leave the flower on after its dies? How do I get more of them?
AnswerHello Brenda
This is certainly odd - I've never heard of a yellow Moonflower! However, it acted like a Moonflower, coming out as it did at night and in a matter of seconds.
You can raise Moonflower from seed, which you can normally buy at any plant outlet. I say 'normally' because I am wondering if you will find this particular flower featured. My advice to you would be to leave one of the flowers on the plants and see if it sets seed. If it does you could plant some of them in spring in separate 3" pots and keep them at about 64 degrees F.
I suggest that you cut the flower off the other plant so that it can put all its energy into building up the roots. Hopefully, it will flower again next year.
In the meantime can I suggest that you go back to the AllExperts gardening menu and click on the link 'Identifying Plants', just to check out this plant.
Good luck with the seeds.
