QuestionMy stella's are very very healthy. The flowers came and were gorgeous!! My question is that after most of the flowers bloom--they get these big green pod like things on them. Do flowers again come out of these big green pods or are they just things that should be cut off??? along with the dead yellow sprouts?? I have asked a gardener @ a golf club and she said they are just seed pods and will not bloom. I cut them off, and wondering if those would have been more flowers this year. I live in zone 4 in Minnesota.
AnswerHi Nancee,
Thanx for your question. Your gardener at the gold club is correct. The green things you describe on your Stella D'Oro day lilies, are seed pods. If you deadhead (remove) the flowers before they form the pods, it will help improve blooming otherwise the plant expends a lot of energy making seeds. I would just snip them off and keep them snipped off and yes, you can remove the entire dead, yellow, scape. Flowers will not emerge from the seed pods. I hope this helps.
