Stella Lily

Question
My stellas have already bloomed this season, and now have a nickel sized ball at the top of the each stem.  A friend told me to remove this (stalk and all), and the lily would bloom again this year.  Is this true?  I thought this was what helped it reproduce following years.
Also, I have a bush (I can't remember the name) that I would like to remove from my flower bed.  It's gotten too large.  I thought we could simply dig it up, but it is soooo rooted, that appears impossible.  How can get get rid of it?  It has obviously multiplied sending shoots up about 2 ft diameter.

Answer
Hi Sandy,
Thanx for your question.  The objects you speak of at the top of the stems of your stella d'oros are seed pods.  I agree with your friend to remove them, stalks and all and yes you should get some more minor blooming.

As for the shrub, if you just want to get rid of it, chop it down to a couple inches above the soil.  Dig a hole in the middle of it (doesn't have to be deep and pour some Roundup in it.  If you prefer organic, you can kill it with periodic treatments of horticultural grade vinegar but be careful not to get the vinegar on anything else.  It will take several treatments to kill a shrub.  I hope this helps.
Tom
