QuestionWe bought this hydrangea and planted it in a large pot to give it room to grow. I fertilized it when I planted it and it was doing fine and we noticed the tips of the leaves where browning, so we did not know if it was not getting enough water or too much water. Would it hurt to take the brown leaves of the plant?
AnswerHello Ray
Hydrangea like to be kept fairly damp so if lack of water was the problem the leaves would be wilting and generally looking very sad. From your description I don't believe this is the problem.
The other thing hydrangea needs is a shady position, although dappled shady is OK. So if you have the pot in full sun, try to move it to a shadier position. Apply a liquid fertilizer about once a month during the growing season.
I know this is going to sound like an odd thing to say at this time of the year, but the sort of damage to the leaves that you are seeing can be caused if you have had some cold nights lately.
I don't think that your plant is in any danger and you could remove the browning leaves if you like - as long as there aren't too many!
