cala lilys

Question
I have many cala lily plants which are doing great, the flowers are beautiful and after awhile they go from white to a yellowish color and then start closeing up is this normal ? Should I cut the flowers off when they start doing this or leave them alone ? I have never grew them befor and im not sure if its better to cut them off or leave them because im not into the whole cut flower thing I think there better growing in the garden instead of a vase

Answer
Hi Brian,
Thanx for your question.  As the calla lily fades, it will start to turn yellow and close up while it starts forming a seed pod.  I would cut the stems off at this point and discard the spent flower.  This will save energy the plant is using to make seeds.  Unless you want to save the seed and try growing them.  Bear in mind if you grow from seed and these callas are hybrids, the flowers will not resemble the parent plants due to hybridization.  I like them growing in the garden too, although they look great in a vase.  I'm not very organized and have a tendency to leave flowers in a vase until they're shriveled up and dead.  So, I can get a lot more enjoyment out of them growing in the yard.  I hope this helps.
Tom
