wintering pond cannas

Question
I have a small pond with a basket of 2 cannas. I know it's early, but I want to plan ahead. How do I keep them over the winter? I need to do it without a basement. Thanks.  - Chris

Answer
Hi Chris,
Thanx for your question.  You can overwinter them anywhere where the temp is above 40癋 (4.4癈) and 50癋 (10癈), dry and dark area.  Another thing you can do if you absolutely have no protected place like this is dig a trench 18 inches deep next to the house on a southern or eastern exposure, bury the rhizomes and then mulch them with some bales of hay.  This should protect them from freezing but keep them cool enough not to start trying to grow again.  I also saw a program on TV once where a woman in Minnesota dug a big trench in the yard, buried some plants in it, covered it and then mulched it heavily with straw so the ground wouldn't freeze.  These were mostly trees and shrubs she couldn't plant in the fall.  I hope this helps.
Tom
