QuestionHi Tom! I just sent a question about calla and then remembered that I am not so good at getting my ranunculi to bloom either. They are the paeony-flowering small mixed colours and as Jane asked previously they look like little roses. I looked them up in my huge book and they aren't in it for species name. Sorry. I start them from those claw-like corms in my greenhouse and I am sure not to overwater since they rot so readily. What conditions do they want in order to bloom? Thanks again!
AnswerHi Lee Anna,
Thanx for your question. I've planted ranunculi before and not had much luck but I did have a few come up and bloom for me. First, soak the claw-like roots overnight in tepid water. Next, dig 15 cm holes in the soil. If you have a lot of clay, mix in some organic matter such as compost or composted cow manure so the tilth of the soil is fluffy and fine. Plant the roots 15cm deep with the claws facing downward. The planting area should be in full sun. Don't overwater as you already know, this causes root rot. Water about once a week if you're not having regular rain. When the plants begin to emerge, side-dress them with some well-composted cow manure (horse, sheep, goat manure is fine too...). I hope this helps.
Tom
