QuestionWe're putting a really inexpensive (i.e. UGLY) fence around our concrete patio to close dogs in/out. Because it is so. . ahem . .inexpensive, we want to grow an evergreen vine over it so it looks like a green wall year round. I've researched a little, but not found recommendations for specific varieties of anything. I've had vague advice like "try Honeysuckle," but not all varieties are evergreen. We are in Zone 6 in the Southwest corner of MO. (read - "we grow rocks like dandelions") It will be on the East side of the house with the majority of it 8 feet from the wall - which means lots of sun, but some evening shade. Flowering is unimportant, but not prohibitive. Fast growing is most desirable. Is there something specific you could recommend? Our local garden center says they can get me almost anything, but they recommended English Ivy - which is shade-loving, and I didn't think grew here well anyway. I would appreciate anything you could advise on the matter. Thank You
AnswerHi Denna,
Thanx for your question. Honeysuckle (Lonicera sp.) stays semi-evergreen here in my Kansas City area property. You can get it in other colors besides yellow and it grows profusely. When you go to the nursery ask for honeysuckles that are evergreen or semi-evergreen. Bignonia capreolata or Crossvine,is native to Missouri and is evergreen. You should be able to find cultivated plants in your area.
