Thanx for your question. Have you thought of Rose-of-Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) or boxwood (Buxus). Another shrub recommended specifically for the south of the UK was Escallonia rubra macrantha.

Forsythia is a fast-growing shrub we use a lot in the U.S. It has beautiful yellow flowers in March and April and then is a green shrub until October. It is easily pruned after it has bloomed and started to leaf out.
Flowering quince, mock orange (philadelphus), eleagnus, Oleria, Prunus, Gorse, Tamarix, Skimmia, Griselinia, Hydrangea.
