Questionwe have several maiden grasses of different ages.the older ones are getting holes of no new growth in the middle of the plants.they are growing in like a donut shape, with nothing in the middle.any idea what causes this and what can be done, if anything? thanks for taking questions. ( oh, we live in the richmon va. area)
AnswerMany plant do this, especially perennials - they start to die out at the center as they get older and new growth spreads outwards and forms that donut shape you've observed.
This is your chance to get new plants for free!
Dig out these older plants, break, or cut, off the new outer growth and transplant to other areas of your garden (or give them to deserving relatives and friends!). Discard the dead central part.
