QuestionI have two plants which are very hardy year-round, and I think the casual name for them is "Spanish bayonettes". They took root after I just tossed them outside my back door and have survived six years. I have noticed their "crown" area is very droopy and looking very worn right now. We have had a good bit of snow this winter, but I can't remember seeing them ever look so bad. Do you think they will perk up, or what can I do for them? They have grown to be so striking that I was planning to put them in a planter or move them to the front this spring.
Thanks in advance
AnswerHi Patricia,
Thanx for your question. I believe you are talking about Yucca aloifolia. Here's a link to the plant. http://www.floridata.com/ref/Y/yucc_alo.cfm The plant is hardy from Zone8-11. You didn't indicate where you were located. If it got a lot of snow sitting in the "crown" you may have some rot going on and it will be questionable if the plant has survived. As long as you have some good leaf growth still going on, it is possible for the main plant to have succumbed to the snow and cold while the pups (side plants) survived. I would just let them go and see how well they come back. These plants can have huge roots so they should be moved while they are still relatively small and manageable. I hope this helps.
