QuestionI live south of Buffalo,NY. I have a potted Red Hibiscus that has been outside since May,2009. It is doing great and has gotten huge. I water it a lot and it produces many, many huge red flowers. It's gotten too big to take indoors without pruning it.
Is this the proper time and how much pruning should be done now?
Last year I took it indoors without pruning, but it's about five feet tall right now. thanks. john
AnswerDear John
Thank you for your question
It is usual to prune Hibiscus from mid-summer (August) to early fall (October), so you still have time! You can cut your plant back by about 1/3 (max.), and then treat it like you did last winter - you were obviously doing something right!!
