QuestionWe live in Southeast Alaska. How should we care for, or store our Fushias. Right now they are doing great, but it's still in the low 50's to high 40's right now. Thanks
AnswerHello Tish
Thank you for your question.
Your Fuchsias need to be taken inside before the temperature falls to 45 degrees F.
They should be stored in a frost free porch or glass-house over the winter where the temperature doesn't drop below 45 degrees F. (that's the temperature at which plants will remain dormant, anything lower and they will probably die!)
You could also wrap the pots in bubble wrap to give the roots some extra protection. The top-growth could die off, but as long as the roots are frost-free there is always a chance that the plant will grow again.
Check all the plants over periodically and remove any dead or dying leaves from the plant and the pots they are in to prevent disease. Water sparingly until the spring.
As the temperature rises and the first signs of growth are seen, feed the plants with a half strength liquid feed once every 2 weeks, increasing the strength and frequency as the growth gets stronger and you can put the pots outside again.
