Cala Lillies seed pod

Question

Cala lillie
I noticed in a reply to Shannon in 2007 you mentioned Cala's having "seed pods"? I was watering today  and noticed my Calas have what looks similar to flowers, but on the inside is a "bubbly" looking thing. These "flowers" also are leaning over towards the ground, some laying on dirt, some outside the flower bed on the concrete. Do these need to be on dirt to re-produce?  Could I also cut them off and "plant" them elsewhere? All of my Cala's are the colored variety, also. Thanks for any info you have!!!  Diane in Virginia

Answer
Hi Diane,
Thanx for your question and thank you for the clear picture of a calla lily seed pod.  Allow the seed pod to turn brown and then remove from the plant.  You can plant these seeds immediately about 1/2 inch deep in a pot and they will germinate in a couple weeks.  Keep under lights and keep moist but not soggy and keep at about 70-75癋.  After the last frost, place the seedlings outdoors in the shade for about 10 days.  After that, plant in the desired location in the garden.  I hope this helps.
Tom
