QuestionHi, Gill. My husband and I did a bed in front w/ lantana, plumbago, African iris and columbine. The bed gets a bit of sun but not a lot. Everything's growing and doing well EXCEPT the columbine. The plants are about the same size as when we planted them approx 10 weeks ago. The leaves are starting to yellow. You may/may not know that That Austin, TX (where we live) had a blistering summer (68 days of 100+) and severe drought. We have watered this bed though. What do you think? Are these plants able to be saved? Is there something we should do? Was this a bad choice? Thanks in advance for your help. Terry
AnswerHello Terry
Thank you for your question.
Columbine (Aquilegia) does like to be in the sun, though it will tolerate partial shade which considering your very high temperatures this year may the better option!. It also needs a moist, but well drained soil.
So - as Aquilegia doesn't generally suffer from disease I'd say the yellowing leaves and lack of growth indicate a good plant in the wrong place.
I think it may be too late to move them now. Perhaps it would be best to give them a go again next year taking into consideration the above cultural needs.
