QuestionI have gotten some seeds from lilies in a friend's yard and now they are germinating. I do not have bulbs. Can I still plant them and when?
I also received some pods for a Chinese Peony? I had never seen them before and was told to let the pods burst open with the dried seeds inside but I do not know when to plant those either.
I live in the Midwest and from the previous information I have read, it says to plant these in the Early Fall. The info was for bulbs, not the seeds I have. Can you help me?
Thanks!
AnswerHi Liz,
Thanx for your question. Daylilies do not grow from bulbs. They grow from rhizomes which are actually underground stems. The seeds can be planted in a pot 1/2 inch deep or in a nursery bed outdoors and left over the winter. The cold treatment will break their dormancy and they will emerge after the last frost. They will look like grass so keep the nursery bed clear of weeds. You can also place the seeds inside a damp paper towel, place inside a plastic baggie and put in the fridge for 60 days. After that, plant the seeds 1/2 inch deep in a pot and keep warm at about 75癋 under a 40-watt shop light. They should emerge in a couple weeks. For outdoor planting, plant in the fall. For indoor planting, start in January. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, gently prick them out and plant in separate pots. Place the pots outdoors after the last frost in the shade for 10 days and then in full sun.
Growing seeds from peonies is a bit more detailed but not difficult. It just takes a long time. It could be 3-5 years before you see your first bloom. Please follow the instructions from the link shown below.

I hope this helps.
